As of June 8, the death toll from the May 12 major earthquake in
China has risen to more than 69000 with over
17000 still missing. A total of 46.16 million of people have
been affected by the devastating earthquake. We are all deeply saddened by this massive disaster. China
Tomorrow Education Foundation (CTEF) has created the Earthquake
Relief Fund to accept donations and bring much needed relief to the
impacted areas. To date, we have raised close to $150000 for
the Earthquake Relief Fund (see Latest
Updates for how we're putting these funds to work).
Your contributions to CTEF's Earthquake Relief Fund will be used to
help the school children and rebuild many of the damaged or
destroyed village schools and communities in the region.
CTEF has been helping school children and renovating school buildings in rural China since 2001.
Even before the earthquake, CTEF had been working with enthusiastic
local volunteers on school renovation projects in Sichuan's Beichuan
and Yilong counties. We are committed to using 100% of the
Earthquake Relief Fund to rebuild schools and communities and help
school children who have suffered from this tragedy.
A separate account has been set up to
handle the Earthquake Relief Fund.
Please help us keep track of the fund by specifying "Earthquake Relief Fund" when making a
donation.
Note: CTEF is NOT planning on transferring donations to
the Red Cross Society of China at the
moment due to regulatory concerns. If you would like to help with
immediate disaster relief efforts, please contact Red Cross,
Mercy Corps or
other charities.

Thanks for your generous donation, CTEF earthquake relief fund
reached
$150,000 last week. While the funds will be primarily used to rebuild
damaged schools, we have deployed a portion of the funds and
partnered with NGOs in Hong Kong and China to provide immediate
relief. Here are some examples of how we have put your money
to work:
* Partnering with InterGlow, CTEF helps pay for the cost of running
a 512 NGO service center that provides much-needed, and often under
funded, volunteer training, coordination and administration services.
* Through
Sower Action,
a charitable organization based in Hong Kong, CTEF will fund
pre-fabricated school rooms to help children in Wen County, Gansu,
quickly get back to school. Many elementary schools in this
county were
badly damaged by the earth quake.
* CTEF has agreed to provide over 800k RMB to rebuild Zhengshankou
Center School in Meishan City, Sichuan. |

May 18, 2008
The Board of Directors of the China Tomorrow Education Foundation
met on Sunday to review the status of fund raising for 512 survivors
after the first week.
With our successful operations in helping remote village schools
over the past eight years, we have received much donor support which
will be critical in our mission to supplement the rebuilding of many
destroyed schools that may not be within the scope of existing
Sichuan reconstruction plans. Other similar charities are also
placing in high priority the planning and building of new towns to
settle the millions of displaced survivors. A number of destroyed
schools may not be replaced due to either the unfortunate loss of
school age children or the suitability of the site given new town
plans.
At the same time, we are eager to take part in aiding the present
life and death emergencies in the earthquake area. Based on
information furnished by our contacts in the field, we understand an
area of urgent need is in providing relief to the survivors. As aid
and money are donated from all over the world, efficient management
and fair distribution of resources is of great concern. Another
challenge many untrained volunteers face is a lack of training to
provide assistance effectively at the most desperate areas.
Thus, we began funding an NGO near Chengdu to provide such ground
level assistance starting last Wednesday. We were told that with
proper training, the supply of food, medicine and shelters would be
better managed and reduce resource wastage. We are also evaluating
agencies in the field which focus on the schooling and counseling of
the surviving children.
With the help of PayPal, we are pleased to report that over $40,000
have been donated to our account to date. Some donations are from
countries as far as Spain, France, Australia and Canada. We thank
everyone who have risen to help in the time of need. |
Donation FAQ
 |
Q: Will my donation be forwarded to China Red Cross?
A: Unless you have already donated to CTEF and insist that we
transfer your contribution on your behalf, your donation will be
managed by CTEF under a dedicated account for earthquake relief fund
. That way we can guarantee to provide you with a receipt for IRS
tax exemption. In case you have already donated to CTEF and want us
to transfer your fund to China Red Cross, please notify us
immediately by writing to donation@ctef.org so that we can transfer
your fund in a timely manner. However, we cannot give you a receipt
for IRS tax deduction due to tax code and regulations.
Q: When can I get my tax exemption donation statement for IRS income
tax filing?
A: For all donations made in year 2008, the statement will be
delivered to you within the first two months of 2009 for tax filing.
We suggest you keep the record of your donation (automatic
confirmation from the payment system or acknowledgment from CTEF, or
cancelled check) as your proof of donation.
Q: When will CTEF receive from my employer's matching funds?
A: The time between your donation and your employer's matching
donation can vary from weeks to months. Companies usually process
matching funds in bulks and may sync up with their fiscal quarters.
If you want to confirm whether your employer has matched your
contribution, please send inquiries to either your employer or
donation@ctef.org.
Q: How do I learn progress on CTEF earthquake relief project? Is
there a newsletter I can sign up?
A: We will update our website with latest development at least
monthly. Meanwhile, all CTEF donors are automatically entered inot
our data base for CTEF newsletters.
Q: Will schools rebuilt by CTEF meet China's standards of seismic
design?
A: This will be a goal we strive for, although our past experience
suggests that many remote areas do not follow national standards. So
far, most of our villages schools are one story and built by proven
traditional methods built by the villagers of the location. Some
schools districts were too faraway in the rural area to contract any
licensed engineers to do the design. For larger school projects such
as multistory buildings, however, we should be able to demand
seismic design compliance and put such terms into the contract.
Q: My employer will only match donation to a nonprofit 501(c)(3)
organization. Is CTEF qualified and what is the EIN?
A: Yes, CTEF is a qualified 501(c)(3) approved by IRS. Its EIN is
91-2006735. See our
financial information page for more details.
Q: My employer needs to know more about CTEF before approving a
match. Who should I contact?
A: You can reach us at donation@ctef.org. Describe your scenario and
we will do our best to help you get matched. You can also show our
web site to your employer and have the matching program staff
contact us.
